Essential lessons from Australia’s best speakers and presenters
I’ve returned with a renewed spring in my presenting step after attending the Professional Speakers Australia (PSA) CADENCE25 event in Brisbane.
The experience was packed with flowing insights for anyone aspiring to become a peak-performing speaker or presenter. The four day programme brought together industry leaders, seasoned professionals, and emerging talents, all united by a shared passion for effective communication.
Here are my top three takeaways that can help elevate your speaking game.
Tip 1 - Mastering storytelling as a core skill
One of the recurring themes was the power of storytelling. Effective speakers know how to weave compelling narratives that resonate with their audience on an emotional level. Storytelling is not just about anecdotes; it’s about creating a connection, illustrating key points, and leaving a lasting impression. Whether you're presenting to a boardroom or addressing a large audience, stories help simplify complex ideas and make them relatable.
Recommendation. If you’re looking to sharpen your storytelling skills, consider training or coaching programs to help you craft impactful stories tailored to your audience. This is a must-have skill for professionals across industries.
Tip 2 - Importance of authenticity
Authenticity emerged as another critical element of high performing speakers. Audiences today value genuine connections over polished performances. Being authentic means aligning your message with your values and delivering it in a way that truly reflects who you truly are. This approach not only builds trust but also enhances credibility.
Why this matters. In the business sector, leaders and team members who communicate authentically develop stronger relationships and inspire teams more effectively. For those new to public speaking, authenticity can be nurtured through discovery, practice and feedback-focused training sessions in a supportive space.
Tip 3. Developing vocal variety and presence
Another standout insight was the importance of vocal variety and physical presence in captivating an audience. Peak-performing speakers use their voice as an instrument; modulating tone, pace, and volume to emphasise key points and maintain engagement. They also leverage body language effectively, using gestures, posture, good eye contact and even props (!!) to command attention and convey confidence.
How to improve? To refine these skills, seek training programs that focus on vocal techniques and stage presence aimed at helping speakers to develop their individual delivery style that will keep audiences engaged from start to finish.
Why peak presentation and communication skills are crucial in business
Whether you're a leader rallying your team, a professional pitching ideas, or a team member contributing to your organisation, effective communication is required. Strong presentation and communication skills can boost confidence, influence decision making, and drive collaboration. These are all essential qualities regardless of your vocation.
I’m so glad I made the effort to keep sharpening and uplifting my skills by attending this event. This experience reinforced my belief that public speaking is a crafted discipline that can be mastered with the right strategies, approach and support.
